Laurence Olivier and John Hurt played respectively Lear and the Fool in this production to great acclaim, winning an Emmy for his performance. It was the last of Olivier’s appearances in a Shakespeare play. At 75, he was one of the oldest actors to take on this enormously demanding role.

When Cordelia, youngest and most honest, refuses to idly flatter the old man in return for favor, he banishes her and turns for support to his remaining daughters. But Goneril and Regan have no love for him and instead plot to take all his power from him.
