The Catalan Atlas is a medieval world map, or mappamundi, created in 1375 that has been described as the most important map of the Middle Ages in the Catalan language, and as “the zenith of medieval map-work”.
November 16 in 1776, just months after the United States declared its independence, the US-flagged vessel Andrew Doria sailed into Sint Eustatius. The governor of the Dutch-ruled island ordered a cannon salute, and in doing so The Netherlands became the first country to officially recognize the flag of the new United States.
