July 13, 1772: Captain James Cook sailed out of Plymouth on his second voyage. He commanded HMS Resolution while Tobias Furneaux commanded its companion ship, HMS Adventure. The purpose was to search for the hypothetical Terra Australis, though Cook’s first voyage had already mapped the east coast of Australia. Still, the good gentlemen of the Royal Society believed the continent should lie further south.
