What’s In A Song? – Volume One on Spotify

One day at work while outside smoking a cigarette with a collegea of mine from Puorto Rico he pointed at the sun and said: look Sol Nenita (the sun in springtime in his country). I immediately recognised a nice songtitle and a melody and some English lyrics were done soon after.

But the song took much longer to finish – 2 years!! I first sent it to someone in Gibraltar who did a Spanish version but that one didn’t really worked out. After a very long time searching I finally met Alberto from Mexico online and he did the job wonderfully. Seems Sol Nenita is not correct grammar in Mexico but somehow he wrote the lyric so that the songtitle could still be Sol Nenita.

Alberto (he does nice mariachi songlyrics) also sent me a recording with him singing the lyric for the pronunciation. My singing is terrible Spanish ofcourse – the vocals were done phonetically and I hardly knew what I was singing at all – but it made him laugh so I must have done something good. “It sounds strange Juan Rancho, but I do like your accent”, he said. He didn’t kept me from putting it online so I guess my version was okay, I hope…

And perhaps it was okay because I somehow managed to get the song to a mariachi group in Holland and the leader who was mexican himself wanted to do the song with his group. Unfortunately this didn’t happen but hey, I wouldn’t have missed the way this song was done. It was great fun working on it!

SAMBA PA TI: All people on this globe know this melody.

Story Behind the Song: The idea to do a lyric on the instrumental Samba Pa Ti was there for some time already. I came across a spanish lyrical version by Jose Feliciano but that lyric was not right for an english translation. I then did this original english lyric myself. Meanwhile I found out the problems that could arise pitching this title. No matter how nice the lyric, the owners of Samba Pa Ti (Sony/BMG) may not allow any lyrical version of this instrumental. Which could mean that this lyrical version simply cannot be done by any artist. That would make it unpitchable… Might be interesting to try though…

I consider these pages to be about songdemos and not presentation of recordings. I already did these songdemos before the days of digital tools with a simple 4 track tapecorder and no help of a computer. As songdemos they can still be usefull, for better recording quality it needs complete updated recordings, which will simply take too much time that can better be spent on new songs.

Only interesting about this recording perhaps is the fact I did the drums myself!! It was the time when I bought an electric drumset (not too expensive and only meant for recordngs of midi drum parts) and ofcourse had to test it. It took a lot of quantising to make it sound acceptable ofcourse but it still sounds “live” enough, I think. It’s another test recording that turned out fine. Don’t know if the title is proper spanish but that’s what the recording was about – call me crazy.

I one day heard about pura vida and how it is used in Costa Rica for saying both hello and goodbye which gave me the idea for this song. I have always liked to do recordings with some latin influences so it was again a fun recording.

Working with cowrites also learned me that whenever I want to do a lyric myself I better keep it simple and not try to be clever with the language because you never know how it translates to native speakers. So that’s why this song like a couple of other english language songs I did myself have this simple english. It might be an advice for all non-native english lyricwriters: just keep it safe and simple, or find a cowrite and at least have it checked.

That said: the pronunciation of english has always been a bit of a problem and has always given me away as a non-native singer. Sometimes the accent sounds fine and even interesting, other times it simply doesnt work, perhaps even not with a demo.
